wtf is a towelket
Anon you shouldn’t have asked this question.
Towelket is a story based RPGmaker game series that originally came out in 2009. Each game is more or less self contained with the characters being more like actors that play specific roles depending on whatever the story calls for. Though there are some callbacks to previous games every now and then.
They’re kind of ahead of their time considering most rpg maker games during that era were more focused on puzzle solving rather than storylines and characters. I would go as far to say they inspired the DSP games in some aspects.
The games are kind of jank, especially by today’s standards where we have rpg maker games being produced by small teams rather than just one person with a working computer.
The stories are probably not what most would consider a masterpiece. A lot of things happen just because and the subject matter and humor mixed with the cutesy art might be a turn off to some people. For some it might be difficult to see where the jokes end and when the seriousness starts due to the fact that the characters often have one expression.
But these games are just so uniquely themselves I can’t help but find them endearing and enjoyable to play.
Most of the games are free and you can download the ones that are English translated here. (Content warnings are under the read more!!!)
So I’ve finished Nyanyamo and Smile dk’s route. I’m going to go out on a limb here and assume all of the “easy” routes will follow the same formula more or less
I’ll probably try Warawau’s route next since her story seems interesting! I’m not sure if the choice at the start of the game matters for this though lmao
I will say the only odd thing about this game so far is this lingering feeling of missing context.
Being a kind of reimagining of Towelket 4, there are some plot points and scenes that are directly lifted from that game, except it’s just missing that slight bit of fluff that made everything in Towelket 4 stick together
This is probably due to the fact that Mocha doesn’t speak in this game. So while there is definitely some kind of conflict happening behind the scenes, Mocha themself doesn’t really seem to have a real motive, unlike in Towelket 4. So far anyway! We’ll see as we keep playing
seeing everyone just mindlessly sign up for threads despite all the clear warning signs feels like I’m living in Sailor Moon or a magical girl anime episode where the Monster of the Day just set up shop over night and their product is literally draining your lifeforce for the Dark Kingdom but people keep going there
Hah, eating a burger right now. I removed the pickles. God this is such a Towelket reference.
